Choosing a Realtor Can Be Like Online Dating
By Edmund Ponikiewski | Edmund Property Group
Let's be honest. Choosing a Realtor can feel a whole lot like online dating. You scroll through profiles, look at pictures, read a few impressive bios, and try to figure out who's genuine and who's just really good at marketing themselves. Everybody claims to be honest, hardworking, dedicated, and passionate. Everybody promises great communication and exceptional service, Sound familiar? Just like online dating, sometimes what you see online isn't exactly what shows up in person.
The Profile Picture Looks Great, But...
We've all seen those online dating profiles where someone looks absolutely amazing. Then you meet them and realize those pictures might have been taken when flip phones were still popular. Real estate can be similar with a flashy website, professional head shots, and a long list of impressive sounding accomplishments are nice but none of those things tell you what it's actually going to be like working with that person.
Are they going to answer your calls? Tell you the truth even when it's not what you want to hear? Look out for your interests or are they going to disappear the minute things get complicated?
Watch Out for the Smooth Talkers
You know the type. They tell you everything you want to hear.
"Your house is worth way more than the others!"
"I can guarantee we'll get your offer accepted!"
"This will be the easiest transaction ever!"
Well, that's wonderful. And I'd also like to guarantee that I'll win the lottery next Tuesday
The truth is, real estate doesn't come with guarantees. Markets change, inspections uncover surprises, financing gets complicated, and sometimes things don't go according to plan. A good Realtor DOESN'T tell you what you WANT to hear just to get your business. A good Realtor tells you what you NEED to hear, even when it's uncomfortable. It is our job to keep it real, get you the most money for your asset (not your home your asset). I personally always want to have a good relationship with my clients but I'm not there to be your friend. A friend will tell you those purple curtains are so pretty (Lying to spare your feelings) I will simply tell you to burn them. Real Estate can be very emotional. Some want a Realtor that's a "yes man/woman" that just agrees with everything. Others go with a straight shooter (like myself) and just rip off the band aid and we get to work.
Communication Is Everything
Ever dated someone who was incredibly attentive in the beginning, only to have them suddenly disappear? Yeah, that's called ghosting, unfortunately, it happens in real estate, too. You shouldn't have to send three text messages, leave two voicemails, and consider filing a missing persons report just to get an update on your own transaction.
Now, I'm not going to call you 28 times a day either. We both have lives, but you should know what's happening, what comes next, and where things stand without having to chase me down. That's not exceptional service. That's basic respect.
Chemistry Matters
Here's something people don't talk about enough. You can hire the most successful Realtor in town, but if your personalities don't work together, the entire experience can be miserable. Buying or selling a home can be exciting, stressful, emotional, and occasionally all three before lunchtime. You're going to have questions. You're going to have concerns. You might even change your mind about something along the way. You need someone you feel comfortable talking to. Someone who listens instead of just waiting for their turn to speak. Someone who understands that behind every transaction is an actual person with a life, a family, financial responsibilities, and a reason for making a move. If you're not a match it okay it doesn't mean you're a terrible client or they're a terrible Realtor it just means y'all didn't mesh well so just move on and you both the time and trouble.
Don't Commit After the First Swipe
Before choosing a Realtor, have a conversation. Ask questions. Pay attention to how they respond. Do they actually listen? Are they explaining things clearly, or are they throwing around real estate terminology hoping you'll be impressed? Most importantly, do you feel like they're interested in helping you accomplish something, or just interested in getting another transaction? There's a difference. A big one.
So, Are We a Match?
I'm not going to tell you I'm the perfect Realtor for everybody because I'm not. I believe in honest conversations, straightforward advice, a little humor, and making sure my clients understand what they're doing before they sign anything. I don't believe in pressure tactics, disappearing acts, or telling people whatever sounds good just to earn a commission. While I take my responsibilities seriously, I don't think the entire process needs to feel like a trip to the dentist. Buying or selling a home is a big deal. It deserves serious attention, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy the experience along the way.
At the end of the day, choosing a Realtor is a lot like finding the right relationship. It's not about who has the best profile. It's about who shows up, communicates, earns your trust, and follows through.
And unlike online dating, I promise my pictures are recent but juggled around with AI for my blog art full transparency. Feel free to contact me with any questions or anything I can do to help. Have a great week y'all!
